I have now almost finished my year in NZ. It was a good time, I had half a year in year 12 and half a year in year 13. I have to say year 13 is so much better because teachers usually trust you more and you can do more stuff.
The food is as good as in Germany especially Pies, I wish we had them back in Germany. I also enjoyed a lot of other stuff like Boxing Day Sales or shops open on a Sunday.
Picking the West coast was probably the best choice i had made. It is simply not raining as much as TV one is telling on their weather report .
All in all I enjoyed my stay mostly because of all the friendly people, starting with my host parents and ending with random people on the street, which are always happy to help whenever you are lost and need some help.

Bald habe ich mein Jahr in Neuseeland beendet. Es war eine unvergessliche Zeit. Ich verbrachte ein halbes Jahr im Jahrgang 12 und eins im Jahrgang 13. Ehrlich gesagt Jahrgang 13 ist war die bessere Hälfte meines Aufenthaltes, da die Lehrer einem mehr vertrauen und du einfach mehr machen kannst (Es gibt hier einem Gemeinschaftsraum für unseren Jahrgang.) Das Essen ist genauso gut wie in Deutschland und sie haben hier Pies unbeschreiblich man muss einfach rüber kommen und diese probieren. Ich habe hier viele verschiedene Dinge genossen, wie zum Beispiel den Boxing Day Sale. Dieser ist am 26. Dezember überall und man bekommt bis zu 50% auf jede Ware oder die Sonntage. Neuseeland ist nicht katholisch geprägt, deshalb wird hier Sonntags gearbeitet und die Läden sind geöffnet. Nach allem was ich erlebt habe muss ich sagen, die Menschen hie machen einem das Leben einfach, jeder, von Gastfamilie bis zu fremden Leuten auf der Straße, ist bereit dir zu helfen wann immer du Hilfe brauchst und fragst. Leider muss ich sagen mein Englisch ist immer besser geworden auf kosten meiner Deutsch Künste manchmal fehlen mir einfach deutsche Wörter wenn ich mit meine Eltern spreche aber die kommen meistens nach ein paar Momenten wieder.

These were the first words to me when I started my biggest experience yet. I had a great welcome and I didn’t think about what I could expect for the coming six months, now I can tell it was a lot.
It was easy for me to make a lot of new friends because most of the people in New Zealand are very, very friendly compared to Germany. School was also very interesting, and I met there a lot of other people as well. I think that I will miss the kindness of the people here when I am back in Germany.
I had a great experience and time of fun, even my English improved a lot which was one of the main reasons to come out to the other side of the world.

So I guess you already read and heard quite a bit about New Zealand if you’re considering coming to Grey High. How everyone’s super nice and everything’s so much more open than in Germany, how awesome pies are. And that is all so true (if you ask me)!
But what have you heard about the West Coast? I can tell you about my time here: My exchange organization, AFS, doesn’t let you choose where exactly in a country you want to go, their host families choose you – so that’s how I ended up on the Coast. And I heard a lot of people say “Why on earth would you want to go here?”. And admittedly I really couldn’t figure that out for myself for quite a while, I had a hard time adjusting to this completely new situation: This really small town (my host family doesn’t even live in Greymouth but in a little place nearby), no public transport, a lot more freedom at school (yes, I found that hard in the beginning – “no homework?!?”, I didn’t think school worked like that :DD) …
But after I took the time to get used to everything, find some friends, and with the support of my great host family I learned to absolutely love the Coast! And there was one thing that really started that feeling for me: The Great Outdoors. Because if you want to do kayaking, rock-climbing, hiking/tramping, surfing, even skiing - The Coast is probably the best place to start, because there are great places to do all of the above (and more!) relatively close by. It is an amazing place to really experience the stunning, rugged natural beauty of this country (Sorry if I sound a bit like from a catalogue, but that’s how it was for me). And best of all: They teach you these things AT SCHOOL at Grey High! The OutdoorEducation Course I was able to do here was one of the absolute highlights of my year here: Really cool teachers, doing all this together with a group of other students, it was incredibly much fun. Before I had no Outdoors background at all, had never even been skiing – now I found a new passion! And all this, as completely new as it seemed to me, is not something totally extravagant, it’s just something you do here: Everything’s right in front of your door.
It’s pretty DIFFERENT here – but that’s what’s so cool about all this! All the new experiences is what makes this opportunity unforgettable.

Also ich denke mal ihr habt schon so einiges gelesen und gehört über Neuseeland, wenn ihr drüber nachdenkt, Grey High zu besuchen. So Sachen wie: Dass alle hier total nett sind und alles so viel offener und einfacher ist als in Deutschland, und wie genial Pies sind. Und das stimmt alles (würde ich sagen)!
Aber was habt ihr über die West Coast, über Greymouth gehört? Ich kann ja mal von meiner Zeit hier erzählen: Meine Austausch-Organisation, AFS, gibt einem nicht die Möglichkeit selbst genau auszusuchen, wo man in seinem Austauschland gerne untergebracht werden möchte.Man wird von der Gastfamilie ausgewählt. So hat’s mich also an die West Coast verschlagen. Und eine Menge Leute meinten „Warum in aller Welt willst du gerade hier ein Austauschjahr verbringen?“. Um ehrlich zu sein: Ich konnte das selbst eine ganze Zeit lang wirklich nicht sagen, es war für mich nicht so ganz einfach, mich an diese völlig neue Situation hier zu gewöhnen. Es ist eine wirklich kleine Stadt (und meine Gastfamilie lebt nicht mal in Greymouth, sondern in einem kleinen Örtchen dicht bei), keine öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel, sooo viel schulische Freiheiten (Ja, anfangs war das schwierig für mich – „keine Hausaufgaben?!?“ Ich konnte mir gar nicht vorstellen, dass Schule so überhaupt funktionieren kann :DD) …
Aber als ich ein bisschen Zeit hatte mich einzugewöhnen, Freunde zu finden, und mit der Unterstützung meiner großartigen Gastfamilie wurde mir langsam klar, wie genial die West Coast überhaupt ist! Dabei eine bestimmte Sache für mich ausschlaggebend: The Great Outdoors. Wenn ihr nämlich solche tollen Dinge wie Kayak fahren (und KAYAK POLO SPIELEN!!!), Rock Climbing/ Klettern, Wandern/Tramping, Surfen oder vielleicht auch Skifahren machen wollt – dann ist die West Coast so ziemlich DER Ausgangsort, weil großartige Möglichkeiten, all das obengenannte (und noch vieles mehr!) zu tun, hier ziemlich in der Nähe sind. Es ist vielleicht der beste (auf jeden Fall ein unglaublich guter) Ort, die überwältigende, raue, natürliche Schönheit dieses wundervollen Landes zu erfahren (Entschuldigt, wenn sich das ein bisschen wie aus einem Werbekatalog anhört, aber für mich ist es so). Und das Beste: All das bringen sie euch IN DER SCHULE an der Grey High bei! Der OutdoorEducation Kurs, den ich hier machen durfte, war eindeutigeines der absoluten Highlights meiner genialen Zeit hier: Richtig nette Lehrer, alle Aktivitäten zusammen mit anderen Schülern machen, das hat unglaublich Spaß gemacht und war total bereichernd. Vorher hatte ich mit Outdoors überhaupt nichts zu tun, ich war noch nicht mal Skifahren gewesen – jetzt habe ich eine neue Leidenschaft! Und so komplett neu wie mir das zu Anfang vorkam, das ist hier nicht was völlig abgefahrenes (anders als für mich :D), das gehört einfach irgendwie dazu: Es ist ja alles quasi vor der Haustür.
Es ist also schon ziemlich ANDERS hier unten – aber eigentlich ist das ja das Geniale an der ganzen Sache! All die neuen Erfahrungen: Das was die Zeit hier einfach unvergesslich mac

About NZ, and my time here
I arrived in July this year, and in the 5 months till now have been totally dazzled by this land.
The time faded away so quickly and I can't believe I have to leave so soon.
I got to know some of the most diverse, interesting and awesome people that I have ever met in my life.
That makes it even harder to leave. Our group of International Students had a lot of fun doing typical New Zealand stuff - we did a lot of outdoor activities, e.g. Rafting, Kayaking, Tramping and lots more.
I really enjoyed the time here in NZ, and I have already decided to come back. You as New Zealanders can be proud of your country, it's a unspoiled, fabulous and astonishing part of the world.

Oh my good, I love New Zealand! I stayed here for 9 months and I didn't want to leave anymore.
First I've been so scared to go to another country for that long, you don't know anybody, you might not know the language very well and the worst thing is probably that you have to leave your family and friends for a long time. But these fears are reasonless; you will get to know other people, a different culture and language.
Greymouth High School is a great school, the teachers are friendly and always keen to help you and the students are just amazing, they are such nice people!
The first two terms I had classes like woodwork, cooking, maths, English and biology. Later I became year 13 student, what that means is I got rid of my school uniform, got to go into the common room and had free periods. My classes in year 13 were calculus, English, history, geography and chemistry.
My host family was very nice and they made me feel like a member of their family, what I much appreciated. I also did some trips around the South Island during the holidays, which the home stay coordinator helped me to organize. I made great friends, met nice people and had a great time, I so recommend an exchange to a different country to you; it is a great opportunity to see something different.

Oh mein gott, ich liebe Neuseeland! Ich war dort für 9 Monate und ich wollte gar nicht mehr weg.
Anfangs war ich ziemlich ängstlich für eine so lange Zeitspanne in ein anderes Land zu gehen, man kennt niemanden, vielleicht kennst du die Sprache noch nicht sehr gut und das Schlimmste ist wahrscheinlich, dass du deine Familie und Freunde für lange Zeit verlassen musst. Diese Ängste sind jedoch völlig unbegründet, du wirst neue Leute, eine andere Kultur und eine neue Sprache kennen lernen.
Greymouth High School ist eine tolle Schule, die Lehrer sind freundlich und immer willig zu helfen und die Schüler sind einfach mal super, sie sind so angenehm.
Die ersten zwei Terms hatte ich Unterrichtsfächer wie, Holzarbeit, Kochen, Englisch, Mathe und Biologie. Später wurde ich dann Schülerin der 13. Klasse, was bedeuted, dass ich meine Schuluniform loswurde, in den Gemeinschaftsraum gehen durfte und Freistunden hatte. Meine Unterrichtsfächer in der 13. Klasse waren, Mathe, Englisch, Geschichte, Geografie und Chemie.
Meine Gastfamilie war sehr nett und sie gaben mir das Gefühl, ein Familienmitglied zu sein, was ich sehr schätzte.
Ich bin auch auf der Südinsel rumgereist, beim organisieren der Ausflüge hat mir mein Koordinator geholfen.
Ich habe mir super Freundschaften aufgebaut, nette Leute getroffen und ich hatte einfach eine tolle Zeit, ich kann einen Austausch in ein anderes Land nur empfehlen, es ist eine tolle Möglichkeit, etwas ganz neues kennen zu lernen.
