Ahurea Tuakiri | Culture

At Greymouth High School, we celebrate the diverse cultures and identities that make up our kura. We are committed to creating a strong sense of belonging, where every student feels proud of who they are and where they come from. Through te reo Māori, tikanga, and meaningful connections with whānau and community, we support our rangatahi to grow in confidence and succeed as themselves.

Kapa Haka

At our school kapa haka is open to all students who are interested. We strive for excellence and work at a level that supports both beginners and advanced performers. Each year, we proudly compete in local festivals on the West Coast, including Te Ahurei. Our students take immense pride in their mahi and represent our school with dedication and passion.

Joining kapa haka requires genuine commitment. Students are expected to participate with a positive attitude, show respect, and be fully engaged in rehearsals. Attendance at additional practices outside of school hours is essential to ensure we perform to the highest standard.

Sister School

In January 2024, Tama High School reached out after discovering that both our schools celebrated 100 years in 2023. From that connection, a sister-school relationship was formed. Since then, we’ve welcomed their principal and groups of students and teachers to our school, and in 2025, our own students and a teacher visited them in Japan.

Through our Sister School agreement, we’ve committed to:

  • Working together in the spirit of cooperation, friendship, and enterprise. We will do this by fostering peace and tolerance between the students and staff of both of our schools and nations.
  • Short-term or long-term exchanges of students. Tama High School students and staff can visit Greymouth High School, and we can visit Tama High School. When we visit each other, students will be assured of a framework of care, support, counselling, and teaching at the highest professional levels
  • Developing a greater understanding of the cultures, social customs and societies of both countries.
