Exciting clash of rugby league under the lights at Wingham Park!

The annual Coast of Origin Rugby League game between Greymouth HS/John Paul II vs Haeata Community Campus (formally Aranui HS) came into it’s 10th year of competition with the 2021 edition going back to Y11/12/13 players from last years Y9/10/11 group. For those who are not aware about the history of this game, it all began after the Canterbury earthquakes to offer the Canterbury school the opportunity to play their sport away from home due to many of the facilities being damaged from the quakes. This annual events has developed into one of the biggest league games on the school calendar and one the boys are always itching to compete in.

Our team only had one training together under the GHS/JPII banner but they had great numbers of 19 players attend and we were in the unique situation that many of the boys play together in the West Coast U18s team so they were very familiar with each others playing ability.

Thank you to our management team of Gene Wilson, Paul Gibson and Tim Moreton for running the boys. Also to official Brad Tacon for refereeing the excellent event. And we cannot forget our awesome ball boy of Lachie Mahuika for being a fantastic assist to the team!

FIRST HALF:

Our side got off to a great start with some solid tackles and strong running. Dom Moles was on the scoreboard within the first 5minutes showcasing his speed on the sidelines and Aston Wilson added the extra.

Quickly Captain Theo Barnett was in for the teams second try after some good work keeping the ball alive making opposition scramble to try and cover but with one too many on the outside to get a good try.

Haeata is a side with plenty of heart and they were in for their first points, and importantly converting to add close down our lead.

Captain Barnett, who is doing a great job leading from the front got in for an early double being tough to put down especially so close  to the try line.

HALF TIME: GHS/JPII 14 – 6 HCC

Wilson was not to be outdone by his team mates also got his name on the try scorers list showing his impressive running ability sneaking in out wide.

Our side was on the attack and launched a sky high kick into the in goal of Haeata putting serious pressure on their defense. A miss handle from HCC meant Moles who was right in the thick of hunting down the kick go in for his second try of the night.

A sneaky wee show and goal right under the post from Sam Shaw made for an easy sixth try for our side and Wilson made no mistake adding the extra points.

Haeata continued working hard through the game and were rewarded with their second try of the game through a clever kick and gather, it was finished with a fantastic conversion from out wide.

There was also another converted try in the mix from our team however we missed who actually got it – if it was you please let us know to update the report of the game.

FINAL: GHS/JPII 34 – 12 HCC
