High scoring affair for the first U15 game of the school season!

On Tuesday 4th May we took our exciting U15 Boys Team off to Hokitika to compete in the first rugby game of the 2021 season.

Our boys were the first ones to have the opportunity to wear the BRAND NEW Greymouth HS rugby uniforms and boy did they look great out on the park – Thank you yet again to Canterbury Sports Wholesale for their excellent quality products!

It was awesome to see Westland HS have about 4/5 girls in the mix of their team, and they held their own against the boys and weren’t afraid to get right in the thick of it.

FIRST HALF

Storm Kingi at right wing was in early for the first points on the board after a great 6 phases of play from the team and working the ball out wide Kingi put on a quick step and dived over the line untouched! Franklin Barry was at the tee and added the extra two points with an impressive kick from out wide.

Will van der Geest who pulled on the outside centre jersey, made some quick work using his strength and speed to get over the line for the second try of the game.

Harry Shaw at #7 was quickly proving his value throughout the field and leading the forwards well, the team made good use of an advantage close to the posts and Shaw got in for his first points, Barry added the extras.

Callum Brown made some very impressive moves throughout the game from the scrum half position. Brown got in for his try untouched with a player to spare on the outside from an excellent set piece play off the scrum.

Shaw got in for a double from a well worked line out setting up a solid foundation for the boys to use the width of the field and kept the ball alive not allowing for Westland HS to set up a true defensive line.

To round out the first half flurry of tries Shaw got in for his hat trick after the team work well as a unit creating a good turnover from within our own half to get in for more points.

HALF TIME: 34 – 0

SECOND HALF

Alex Clark playing at #8 got his name on the scorecard rumbling over the line with great support from the team from yet another solid scrum creating a strong platform for the boys to work off. Brown took over the kicking duties slotting in the conversion.

Blake Dixon who throughout the game has been an absolute work horse at #6 breaking through many tackles and putting the team on the from foot was rewarded for his work, once again brushing off tackles from just over half way to finish in the corner.

Kingi got in for a double with an excellent runaway try showing off his impressive speed, Dixon took to the tee and added the conversion.

Tyler Spence who came on as a solid impact player got in for team’s 10th try of the game. The team again used the width of the field showing off some great ball skills and finding easy gaps in the defensive line.

Kaleb Wisdom read the play perfectly from within the opposition 22 with the forward pack putting pressure on at scrum time and Wisdom read the play well for an intercept try – a great individual effort.

FINAL SCORE: 63 – 0

The game was a huge achievement for the group who have been building up well and by having 4x Year 9s, 13x Year 10s and 2x Year 11s on the park you can just imagine how exciting we are about the future of rugby union at Greymouth HS.

Although the scoreline blew how hugely in favour of our side we would like to thank Westland HS for putting up a great fight and never giving up, they had some nice wee patches of play that made us work hard to keep them off the scoreboard.

Huge thank you to:

  • Head Coach McGirr for the multiple weeks of preparation you have put in with the boys, you could definitely see the team work throughout the game.
  • Our assistants of Griffin Thomas and Noah Goodwin-Lister for their excellent support throughout the game, fantastic to have our senior boys wanting to be involved in this younger group.
  • The young officials who did a fantastic job managing the game.
  • And to our hosts and opposition Westland HS, great first hit out of the season!
