3 GHS teams take the field in an exciting Football Tournament
After this fixture being postponed from last week in Reefton the footballers were buzzing to play in Hari Hari. It was a stellar day on the pitch, be that slightly chilly with the fresh coat of Spring snow covering the surrounding hills.
The tournament was played as 9aside football, 8 players and 1 goalie on smaller fields and smaller goals which made for some exciting close games as it was that bit harder to score.
The girls played every team twice and it was extremely close throughout where penalty shoot outs were talked about as there were multiple nil all games. Many of our GHS girls have a limited amount of football knowledge, however they still made the most of the tournament and really enjoyed themselves! They racked up two nil all draws against SWAS, a lost 0-2 to BHS and a nil all draw against BHS as well. Very tight competition and it was great to see all 12 players representing GHS well throughout the day. Congratulations on a great day team!

The Senior Boys team took a wee bit of time to warm up in the pool play having a 1 all draw against KAS and two nil all games versing BHS and GHS Junior. The Seniors took awhile to adjust to the much smaller goals than what they are used to playing with in Sunday competition – this was a challenge within itself. The team still put on several attempts always attacking the goal. They had a tight game against the Junior team in the semifinal but got up for the win to then take on BHS in a tense final! This game could have gone either way with both teams having multiple attempts on goal but the keepers played extremely well, unfortunately a late penalty spot kick against GHS Senior allowed BHS to take the win 1-0. The boys were gutted to have the game end in that way as we were all gearing up for a shoot out! Congratulations boys on a great tournament.
The Junior Boys team put on a great show of football against opposition that where physically much larger than them but it didn’t deter them from giving 100%. In pool play they got a 1-0 win over KAS with Ray Wate slotting a great shot, plus a nil all draw against GHS Senior and when down 1-4 to a strong BHS team. They lost to the Senior team in semifinals to go on and play KAS in the 3rd/4th playoff. This was a great playoff just like the 1st/2nd game where again it could have gone either way. Late in the second half KAS got the all important goal to take the win against the Junior team. Well done boys on an exciting tournament and not giving an inch to the older and bigger players!

Many thanks to Deb and Rob at South Westland Area School for picking up this tournament when Reefton where unable to host, the players were thrilled to get on the pitch to represent their school!
The biggest thank you goes to football mad Mr Tangney for not only coming along and being a great coach/supporter of football but for also running the weekly lunchtime trainings to get these teams prepared for the tournament. Also would like to extend the thank you to Mr McDonald and Jimmy Brown for taking the group down with us and being fantastic coaches and supporters for the teams. We are very lucky at GHS to have so many of our staff wanting to be involved with our sports teams.
