1st Place and 3rd Place for GHS in 2020 Competition

It was a buzz of excitement at the Westland Rec Centre on Wednesday where 10 teams were in action across two competitions. Teams were playing halves to fit in as many games as possible in the day which made for some fast paced basketball. It was also great to see so many supporters there throughout the day, it created such a great atmosphere for all the teams to compete with.

The boys competition was split into two pools, then to semifinals and playoffs to find the top team. The GHS boys made it through pool play confidently but in the semifinal they went down to a well drilled JPII Marist side – who went onto win the competition. Our boys worked very hard throughout the day and did us proud, this is a younger group of boys who have had a good local season in among Senior Boys or Men’s teams testing and pushing them to achieve greater things. Congratulations on your 3rd place finish boys – lets look to 2021 where we hope to get into that final playoff! Thank you to Coach Robbie Barrow for all this work with these boys, it has been great to see their development through the year. Also thank you to Joseph Cotterill and Theo Barnett for assisting Robbie on the day, is great to have awesome basketball minded senior at our school helping younger ones develop.

The girls competition saw a round robin format with the final placings decided on wins/losses. The GHS girls put on an awesome performance with not dropping one game, the last round ended up being a ‘final’ against the Buller side with both going through unbeaten. Our girls were tested a wee bit but still came through with a comfortable win. Thank you so much to Coach Fi Ginivan for coaching these girls throughout this season, they have learned a lot from you which can be seen on court with their basketball knowledge. This is a talented young group of ladies who give it their all and we look forward to their future achievements! Also thank you to our fill in players from Primary school as many of our original team had been dealing with injuries.

Thank you to all of the referees over the day, without all of these helpers we cannot have tournaments like these – Derek, Demi, Bronah, Lofa, Joseph, Logan, Karl, Nikaia, Robbie, Deb, Alex, Francis.
