A great day of netball for the junior team!
The West Coast Secondary School Junior Netball tournament was hosted in Hokitika under the DWC Sports Hub roof on the 21st June that saw teams from Westland HS, John Paul II, South Westland AS, Buller HS and Greymouth HS in action.
The games were quick 7 minute quarters to fit all the action into the day without players having too much time on court to take care of their bodies.
The first game for GHS was against South Westland AS, from start to finish the GHS dominated the game with every player getting some good game time. The shots didn’t look like missing and the defense through the whole court stopped any attacking opportunities. GHS took the convincing win 34-6.
Game two was against our up the road rivals of John Paul II which looked like being a close match seeing them in action against other teams. GHS started the game strongly, coming out of the blocks on fire building on the previous game. The attacking end had to work hard to get the ball in the circle with excellent pressure from JPII who had a good height advantage. GHS defense had to be on top of their game to stop the big passes getting into the very mobile shooter, which GHS did very well. Along with solid circle defense the midcourt carried the load putting on the pressure to stop JPII flow through court. GHS came out with a 21-10 win, but the score line did not reflect how tight the game felt.
The third game of the day was against Buller HS. GHS carried on their form from the previous games with some lovely circle work and were able to change up a few positions to test some other combinations. Buller had some great accurate shooters but yet again our full court defense were stopping the ball from getting into the circle. GHS speed through the midcourt was too slick for Buller and GHS cam away with another solid win, 26-11.
The final game of the day, and third game in a row with only 20 minute between games was going to test out team against the toughest team of the competition, hosts Westland HS with both teams being undefeated. WHS came out strong winning the first quarter 6-4 which spurred GHS into changes for the second quarter. The change of combination created the defensive wall again stopped any opportunity for WHS and the shooting circle started to move the ball around more freely with speed to give GHS a 2 point lead going into the break. From there GHS didn’t look like faulting with great control through the midcourt and shooter making some nice shots. A fantastic team effort with everyone doing their jobs earned the team a strong 22-9 win!
Greymouth HS came away with the top spot from this tournament which is a great lead into the main competition of the year – the South Island Secondary School Junior Tournament, hosted in Christchurch in the July school holidays. We cannot wait to hear how you perform!
Thank you to Coach Tarn Mahuika, Manager Jolene Pritchard, Umpire Nadia Lee and the many vocal supporters who made the trip to Hokitika to cheer on the team!
