6 West Coast schools, 15 teams, 36 games, 2 competitions – what a day!
It was a huge day of volleyball action at the Westland Rec Centre with the WCSS Senior Volleyball Tournament in full swing! Fantastic to see so many teams competing so well throughout the day and just being amazing people for keeping the full draw on schedule.
There were seven girls teams involved which meant the draw was split into two pools, one with three teams, other with four teams. The top two in each pool advanced to semifinals and the bottom three teams competed in a round robin format.
The GHS A team went through pool play with a straight set win against WHS and a straight set loss to BHS. This sent them through to play a very strong JPII team, the lost the first set heavily but contested very well in the second only loosing by 3 points. In the 3rd/4th playoff they came up against BHS again that made for a more exciting game than their first encounter with GHS taking the first set 21-11, BHS came back with a 8-21 set to push it into a third set tie breaker decider, normally only played to 11 points but it pushed out to 14-16 in favour of BHS showing both teams were really pushing each other. Congratulations on your 4th place effort team!
GHS B came up against the two teams that would be in the final JPII and SWAS, GHS lost both these games in straight sets to the two very organised teams. In their third pool game they got a close win against KAS. With a 1-2 record GHS B went into the Round Robin competition with KAS and WHS so they all got some more games. GHS got the W over a thriller three set game against WHS then went down again to an improving KAS at the end of a long day of competition. This saw the GHS B team take 2nd in the round robin competition and finish 6th overall. Well done girls, you could see your weeks of training have paid off a different times in your games!

Eight boys teams took the court meaning we had two pools of four teams vying for those important playoffs spots. Top four teams went through to 1st – 4th playoffs, bottom four competed for 5th – 8th playoffs.
The GHS Boys team racked up two great wins in pool play against WHS and KAS but also had a loss to an organised and very tall JPII A team but were able to push it to a third set decider showing that our GHS Boys team are a talented bunch. There semifinal saw them come up against the GHS Mixed team which made for a very exciting and tense game, Boys took the first set 21-13, Mixed came back with a 11-21 set pushing it into a third set decider. There was nothing between these teams and it saw the Boys take the third 11-9 sending them through to the 1st/2nd final! After what the boys called a bit of an upset win over GHS Mixed they again face the strong JPII A team. This time the JPII team took the game in straight sets, possibly with our boys using a lot of their energy to take the semifinal win. Congratulations on a great tournament boys. Excellent to see your weeks of training paying off and getting you to the final!
The GHS Mixed team was probably the most experience GHS competing on the day which could be seen through their use of the three hits and setting each other up for some good smashes. They went through pool play taking the top spot over JPII B, BHS and SWAS – but they were tested with two of their games going to a third set decider with the BHS game being a thriller! As mentioned above they lost their semifinal against GHS Boys but still produced a good performance. Safe to say this loss put the fire in the belly of the Mixed team and they beat BHS in straight sets 21-19, 21-12 to redeem their previous loss and locked in that 3rd place finish. Well done on a fantastic day of volleyball team!
