Māwhera Services Academy is a pathway offered at Greymouth High School for students in Years 12 and 13 who are interested in careers in the armed forces, police, fire service, or related industries. While this background interest can be an advantage, it is not essential — any application will be considered. Year 11 students may also be considered on a case-by-case basis.
The Academy provides a supportive environment for students who work best in smaller groups. It is based onsite at Greymouth High School, with students fully participating in the wider school community while being mentored by a full-time Director with a military background.
The programme includes English, Mathematics and Core Skills, alongside two other subject options chosen by each student. Core Skills focuses on employability and services training, including:
Students can also access trades and Gateway programmes while working towards their NCEA qualifications.
The Academy is supported by the NZ Defence Force through a range of activities, courses and exercises.
For junior students, a ‘taster’ programme is available through CACTUS. This module is offered to Year 9 and 10 students and includes elements of military discipline, teamwork and fitness. It is particularly suited to students who enjoy being active and learning in a hands-on way.
