Greymouth High School is proud of its strong sporting culture and history of achievement.
We offer a wide range of opportunities for students to get active and involved — whether competing at local, regional, or national levels. We also place great value on participation in non-competitive physical activity, recognising the many benefits sport brings to the wellbeing of our rangatahi.
We work closely with other West Coast schools through the West Coast Secondary Schools (WCSS) competition. Throughout the year, students can take part in a variety of inter-school events designed to increase participation, build connections, and encourage students to try something new.
Information about upcoming WCSS events is shared in the school newsletter and on our Greymouth High School Sports Hub Facebook page. To enter, students can visit the Sports Office or email the Sports Coordinator once sign-ups open.
A wide range of sports are available at Greymouth High School. We have teams competing in the weekly basketball league at the Westland Recreation Centre and run the Brockbank Graves Rugby Series in Term 2, where our First XV hosts a six-week competition involving schools from both the West Coast and Christchurch.
We also support students interested in joining local club sports such as netball, squash, tennis, football, and more — and we’re happy to help whānau navigate those opportunities.
Each year, our students proudly represent the school in major events like Tournament Week, where teams travel across the South Island, and the iconic Coast to Coast race, which regularly features both students and staff. Each year, we hold our whole school Athletics Day and Cross Country; these are highlights of our school calendar, being great days full of house spirit, competition, and fun as students compete for points towards the coveted House Shield.
Our Sports Coordinators are here to support students and their families to explore the full range of sporting opportunities available — both within the school and in the wider community.
We are committed to providing inclusive, engaging pathways so that every student has the chance to participate, enjoy, and succeed in sport. Our Sports Coordinators are always happy to talk through any questions you may have. Feel free to get in touch for a chat anytime!
