WCSS Junior Touch Report

November 9, 2022

Stunning day out in Reefton!

On Wednesday 9th November we took two touch teams to Reefton for the West Coast Secondary School Junior Touch Tournament. It was a fantastic day of sporting action, paired with outstanding sunny weather making for quick conditions.

We had one boys team and one girls taking on John Paul II, Westland High School, South Westland Area School and hosts Reefton Area School.

There we 16 games across the day with some excellent talent on show and plenty of speedy players across all teams.

Our boys team only had a few players who have played touch before and the rest of the team was keen to give it a go, our few experience players really stepped up in their leadership and helping the other in the team learn the tips and tricks to touch. It was fantastic to see so many players stepping on the field and improving throughout the day, and of course the enjoyment was very high for all players. The boys finished in a tied fourth place with Reefton Area School with a super tight finish to the day with each school scoring one try a piece.

Boys Team: Rhys Dumelow, Jai Englebresten, Bayley Farmer, Xaiver Gawith, Archie Haldane, Jacob MacKinnon, Ethan Macklin, Jason McCracken, Jacob Speakman

Our girls team was full of talented young women with the majority having a lot of touch experience which could be seen with their on field technical play putting the opposition under serious pressure. The girls went through the tournament not dropping a game even though they were tested by the SWAS team who kept in touch with a 4-2 score.
